What's My Story
Hello, my name is Lena Tu and, since the age of 18, I have been financially independent. My parents filed for bankruptcy while I was growing up. It’s not like they didn’t want to help; they just couldn’t. I paid for community college by working 30-35 hours a week as a server, on top of going to school full time and maintaining a 3.5 GPA. Once I graduated with my Associate of Arts degree I was able to move out on my own. It was a little overwhelming growing up so fast, so I decided to take a few years off to figure out my next move. It was earlier this year, after saving up, that I knew exactly what career I wanted to pursue.

I was accepted into University of Washington Bothell as an Interactive Media Design major. My school and FAFSA had given me a Pell grant of $5,700, a subsidized loan, and an unsubsidized loan. I thought everything was going great. My classes were challenging, and I was excited to be back in school. Two months into the quarter, after reviewing my stepdad’s tax return, they cancelled my Pell grant. According to FAFSA, my parents should have enough money to support my education. They didn’t take into account that my mom doesn’t work, I have two younger siblings, and my family is still weighed down from debt. They still barely make it month to month, even without having to support me.

Once I lost the grant I consulted the financial aid office, hoping for another option. I tried signing up for private loans, but banks and credit unions require a cosigner. Nothing seemed to work. My parents will not cosign for me and I don’t have any other family members to go to. I am out of options at this point.

I still owe close to 2,000 dollars in tuition for this current fall quarter, so I can’t sign up for my next round of classes in the winter. I am currently working in retail, as a server, and as a housecleaner with a full time course load, just to make it by on rent and bills.

I have worked so hard on my own to get where I am today, but right now I am just asking for a little help. I am passionate about my major and I don’t want to drop out now after just getting started again. Anything will help, and I appreciate it all so much. Thank you.
Future Plans
My plan is to finish up my degree in Interactive Media Design at the University of Washington Bothell and then move closer to the city to find an internship and get a career that involves Web Development, Graphic Design, and Programming.
